The Importance Of An Accredited TEFL Program

TEFL Accreditation
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), whether domestically or abroad, can be an immensely rewarding profession. It is one that not only delivers a high level of satisfaction but also offers a great variety of opportunity for one’s world to expand. Given the impact that teaching English as a foreign language can have, it is important that you seek a program that has the full and appropriate certification from the international TEFL accrediting body.
Throughout English and especially in the greater London area, there are a large number of organisations or programs that offer courses in how to become a teacher of English as a foreign language. Some are in person, some are online and some offer courses in both modalities. The cost, format and length of the whole program will no doubt factor into your decision as to which program to enroll in. However, one should not overlook the importance of approval from the governing TEFL accrediting body.
When undertaking a course of study, you should be mindful of not only the classes and material to be covered but of what your end goal is. You will want to have in hand upon completion of your program what will essentially become your passport to a new profession—and the world, in some manner as well. If you waste your time on a program that is not fully certified by the global TEFL accreditation body, you may have a very difficult time in finding employment as a teacher of English as a foreign language. Most schools or institutes that offer English as a second language courses require completion of a course that is fully accredited by the World TEFL Accrediting Commision (WTEFLAC). If you do not have this certification, you may be out of the running for many teaching positions, irregardless of where they are located or any past experience you may have.
Just as you would take great care in selecting a university course, you should take the time up front to research the various programs that offer certification in teaching English as a foreign langauge. Find out first and foremost if they are recognised by the TEFL Accreditation Body. Then you will want to find out how long they have had their accreditation and how many students they have graduated in that time. All of this will tell you the overall commitment the organisation has to their accreditation and, therefore, to the profession of teaching English as a foreign language overall. The greater their commitment, the better prepared you know that you will be once you complete your course of studies.

What Are The Requirements For TEFL Accreditation?

TEFL accrediting body
There are multiple organizations that certify individuals and institutions to teach English as a second language. If you want to become certified by a TEFL Accreditation organization, there are a few things that most organizations will require you to do.
First of all, you will need to demonstrate or provide proof of English competency. Depending on the organization, and your own circumstances, this may involve taking exams, and interviewing with a program director. If English is not your native language, you may also need to provide documentation and proof of relevant experience in an English-speaking environment.
Another common requirement for TEFL Accreditation is taking TEFL courses. These courses are offered in many locations worldwide. If you cannot attend a course in person, you may be able to find a course online. TEFL courses may address issues such as teaching for varying learning styles, encouraging student involvement, development of materials and resources, ethics, and special focuses such as English for business, presentations, or secretarial work. Whatever courses you decide to take, make sure that they will count toward your accreditation with whichever organization you are working with.
In order to qualify for TEFL Accreditation, you may also be required to commit to a strict code of conduct. This may involve the ways you promote or advertise your courses, your enrollment and admissions policies, fair treatment policies, transparency, and other ethics issues.
In order to maintain your accreditation, your courses and work will most-likely have to be evaluated periodically to assess whether your courses continue to meet the requirements set forth by the accrediting body. This can include continuing education for instructors. It may also include observation of courses, and reviewing of materials by qualified third-party professionals. You may also be required to demonstrate that you adhere to the ethics principles to which you have committed, in order to maintain your accreditation over an extended period of time.
There are a few things that people often think are required for TEFL Accreditation that are actually not required. One of these things is fluency in a language other than English. Generally, the teaching model adopted by most organizations is an English immersion model, where no other language is spoken in the classroom. Also, the fact that in many classes, there may be ten or more native languages collectively spoken by class members, makes knowing a foreign language a mute point in respect to conducting courses. However, if you are living in a foreign country, it will be to your advantage to know the predominant language of the country you are in. Also, having learned a foreign language will give you a better idea of how to teach a language to your own students.

Why You Should Certify Yourself With A TELF Accreditation Body

Accreditation TEFL
If you are interested in teaching English to people who are not native English speakers, the first thing to do is find out how to make yourself marketable for that kind of career. Being a native English speaker is not the only qualification for a job teaching English as a foreign language. To be a good teacher, you will need to spend some time learning techniques and principles that will enable you to teach your students effectively. It will also help you to have guidelines and goals as you teach your class. You will need to certify yourself with a TELF accreditation body. Having credentials from a TEFL accreditation organization will communicate to prospective students and employers that you are serious about your work, and that you have what you need to succeed. With certification, you’ll be more able to find a job teaching English as a foreign language.
Teaching English as a foreign language is an exciting and rewarding career. With it, you may have many opportunities to travel to different countries, experiencing the cultures in more depth than would be possible as a tourist. As a resident of a country, you actually become a member of the society, rather than just an observer. You’ll also be able to visit famous and historic landmarks that many people only dream of seeing in person.
On the other hand, maybe you live in a predominantly English speaking culture and are perfectly happy living where you are, but would enjoy the opportunity to associate with people from different cultures. In this case, certifying yourself with a TELF accreditation body will give you more freedom to enjoy teaching English as a foreign language without uprooting yourself and your family in order to live in a foreign country.
If you natively speak a language other than English, but have become very proficient in English through your life experiences, you may be able to become certified by a TELF accreditation body. For instance, if you are from Germany, have become proficient in English, and still live in Germany, or have returned to live in Germany, this may apply to you. In this instance, you will enjoy the opportunity to associate with people of your own culture while being able to teach them something you know a lot about.
In whatever circumstance you wish to teach English as foreign language, being certified by a TELF Accreditation Body is a key ingredient to long-term success. Whether you want to stay where you are or travel abroad, there are ample opportunities waiting around the corner.
