What Kind Of TEFL Course Should You Take

Accreditation TEFL
There is an abundance of TEFL courses available to future English teachers interested in teaching internationally. Unfortunately, not all courses are created equal, so you have to make sure that the course is up to the standards set by a TEFL Accrediting Organisation. Making a hasty decision can lead to a stifled and stagnant career, low job prospects and low pay as well.
One of the first things you’ll want to check up on is making sure that the TEFL course is at least 120 hours. In order to be accredited, a course has to be at least 100 hours of academic training and anywhere from six to 20 hours of practice teaching actual ESL students. A standard full-time TEFL course lasts four weeks long. A part-time or online class will usually take about two to three months to complete. Any course that lasts fewer than 100 hours and doesn’t offer teaching practice will not reward you with internationally recognized certification.
A course that has been audited by a TEFL Accrediting Organisation is one that you should be looking for. Courses and schools that have been evaluated by an accrediting organisation have undergone a rigorous review both academically and professionally. TEFL accrediting bodies to keep an eye out for include NCFE, ACCET and College of Teachers. Beware of any schools that don’t have a true accreditation. Some institutions have started putting together their own accrediting body on their website in order to give themselves a fake accreditation. Look for accrediting bodies with more than 20 or 30 organizations and have been opened for more than five years since those hold the most credibility and respect in their field.
A high-level TEFL course should be taught by a high-level instructor. If you’re taking a university-level

course, then you should have a teacher who has a master’s degree in TESOL or equivalent training and experience. You’ll also want a teacher who has experience. If the course has a mentor or tutor whose qualifications aren’t fully listed, then that may be a course that you want to stay away from. A course that has been evaluated by a TEFL Accrediting Organisation may cost a bit more. Qualified teachers have more of a right to ask students to pay more for their level of expertise. While you want to save as much money as possible during the process to become a qualified TEFL teacher, you shouldn’t be afraid to spend money on quality. Cheap courses may indicate that they are taught by teachers who aren’t fully qualified.
Before you start your TEFL homework, make sure that you do your homework about the class before you enroll in it.

If your institution is accredited, then students know that they won’t have to do such extensive background research on your school to make sure that they aren’t being taken advantage of. If you have a recruitment agency, you should also make sure that is accredited as well. That way students will know that they won’t have to wait any longer than necessary for their paycheck, visa or release letter. Being accredited really speeds up the process whether you have a TEFL institution or a TEFL recruitment agency.

What Does TEFL Accreditation Mean?

TEFL Accreditation
To many, teaching English as a foreign language sounds exotic, more like an adventure than a career. To those that embark on this profession, you know that it is truly a most unique and exciting mix of both adventure and serious career and profession. That is why you should exerise great care and caution when selecting your course of study to become a teacher of English as a foreign language. You will want to ensure that your program is certified by the worldwide TEFL accrediting body. When you do, you assure yourself of many things, including a better chance of success in your future.
The world TEFL Accrediting Commission (WTEFLAC) has developed and promotes a strong code of conduct that drives their organisation and all programs that they certify. In order to be certified by WTEFLAC, a program or institute must agree to abide by all principles noted in the group’s code of conduct. The guidelines from the TEFL accrediting body cover a variety of topics including: program advertising, student admissions, course modality and delivery, content of courses, formal assessment, staff development and an overall focus on quality and method for assuring ongoing quality.
In each of these areas, there are some general themes. Consistency, truthfulness and accuracy must remain high priorities for any school, institute or program. What is advertised or promoted to potential students must actually be the realisation once they sign up and are admitted. This includes everything from the advertised costs to the quality of the content. The requirements for admission must be consistently applied across all applicants and a high level of English competency must be required. The global TEFL Accrediting Body also requires that clear educational methodologies be utilised with a strong focus on peer to peer teaching and exercises throughout the program. Additionally, faculty at a program certified by the TEFL accredited body must each have a minimum of three years of experience of teaching English as a foreign language themselves. At a base course level, all course materials are required to meet certain standards from pace to continuity and sequential development of themes. Methods for and timing of assessment of students should be clearly identified and consistently followed.
The above items are just some of the areas ensured by certification by the world TEFL accrediting body and why you, as a prospective student of a program for teaching English as a foreign language, should consider only those schools and programs that have the certification from the global TEFL governing body. Doing so will ensure you the highest level of instruction and the best chance for success post graduation.
